Seven Laboratories Cleared To Start Testing For COVID-19 in Uganda

Until today, the country was only using the Entebbe based Uganda Virus Research Institute-UVRI to conduct COVID-19 tests. The new centres include Makerere University's department of microbiology and immunology, National Health Laboratory Services, the Infectious Disease Research Collaboration in Tororo district, the Uganda Virus Research Institute Plague Laboratory in Arua district, Gulu University, Rakai Health Sciences Laboratory and the Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital laboratory. According to the health ministry, the locations were chosen based on the dynamics of infection spread of the disease and the availability of testing reagents. Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng announced this during the third national COVID-19 briefing held today in Kampala. She said that currently, the Uganda Virus Research Institute is running between 2000-3000 tests every day. However, with the addition of new laboratories, the county could run up to 10,000 tests. Wamugoda asked the Muslim leadership to ensure that the food gets to the vulnerable fasting Muslims. The items were handed over in Industrial area, Mbale. MBALE:40 Shops Closed For Defying Government Directives On COVID-19 .

Most of the shops forcefully closed are in the central business area. Rogers Taitika the Elgon region Police spokesman says that as security they observed that many shops not dealing in food items had opened. Taitika says they swung into action and closed them and five people who refused to comply where arrested. He has urged the public to adhere to government directives to avoid inconveniences. Taitika has asked proprietors of restaurants to remove all seats. He says the guidelines do not allow people to converge and eat in restaurants.

Bicycle Mechanics Reeping Big From The Lock-down

Bicycle mechanics are experiencing a boom in the number of people seeking their services and spare parts because of the ban on public transport.   President, Yoweri Museveni banned both public and private transport with the exception of emergency and cargo vehicles as part of the prevention measures against Covid19. He urged Ugandans that where it is inevitable, they can use bicycles or walk as the alternative means of reaching their different destinations in their locality.  This has forced many Ugandans to resort to bicycles to run their errands. Apparently, this has created a boom in business for bicycle dealers and mechanics across the country.   Arnold Muhumuza, a bicycle mechanic in Kyebando, a Kampala suburb, says he receives many clients in need of spare parts because some of them had kept their bicycles for long without use and have pulled them out because of the transport ban. He however, says finding spare parts is very hard since most dealers have closed their shops

New Ministry Of Education Teaching System Locks Out Bunambutye Camp Learners.

The decision by the government to deliver lessons using broadcast media and online platforms has shut out learners in the Bunambutye resettlement camp in Bulambuli district. There are only three television sets in the resettlement camp, which is home to over 200 families. The television sets that were acquired through hire purchase are powered by solar. The families have to pay daily fees before they can use the sets. There are over 300 students who attend studies at Masaba Secondary School in Sironko and over 1500 pupils of Bunambutye Primary School, which is found in the camp. Emma Kooko, a senior six student at Masaba Secondary School offering BCM, says the idea of studying at home is unrealistic for children from disadvantaged homes. He is among the lucky children in the camp whose family has a TV set. Kooko however, says what is taught on TV is insufficient to equip them with the necessary knowledge. MBALE:RDC Vows To Arrest Journalists Who Misrepresent Facts On The Works Of The COVID-19 Taskforce.

By: Egonda Emmanuel Anelka Mbale Resident District Commissioner Suleiman Baraza Ogajo has threatened to arrest journalists who misrepresent facts regarding the work done by the District COVID-19 Task Force. Ogajo sounded the warning today while receiving more than seven tones of maize flour from Mbale District Woman Member of Parliament Connie Nakayenze Galiwango. Nakayenze also handed over sugar and salt. According to Ogajo, the Mbale District Task Force has done a commendable job and journalists must report the facts. Connie Nakayenze Galiwango the Mbale District Woman MP said that she has used the 20 million shillings given to every legislator to purchase food and other essential items. Nakayenze said she could not return the money yet several people in Mbale need food. Nakayenze also urged the District Task Forces countrywide not to politicize their work. She said that the country is battling the COVID-19 pandemic which is a matter of life and death and so politicking can wait.

Sironko Woman Member Of Parliament Donates To The District COVID-19 Task Force

The woman member of parliament for sironko district Nambozo Florence Mayoga has today handed over a donation of 4 Metric tons (4000kg) of Maize Flour and 100 cartons of Salt to Sironko district COVID-19 Taskforce towards the efforts to help the vulnerable people that are affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. Nambozo further promised to give any other support that she will have come across, to the people of sironko saying it is not the end of her support to the people but rather a routine character of sharing with the people. She also noted that Giving to the vulnerable is a N oble cause to everyone and the fight against Covid-19 that has ravaged the world can't be fought by an individual but it has to be a collective effort in Solidarity,she has also called upon all other well-wishers and   organizations to come up and support the vulnerable Ugandans.
