MBALE:40 Shops Closed For Defying Government Directives On COVID-19 .

Five people have been arrested and over forty shops closed for defying government directives on COVID-19 in Mbale.

Most of the shops forcefully closed are in the central business area. Rogers Taitika the Elgon region Police spokesman says that as security they observed that many shops not dealing in food items had opened.

Taitika says they swung into action and closed them and five people who refused to comply where arrested. He has urged the public to adhere to government directives to avoid inconveniences.

Taitika has asked proprietors of restaurants to remove all seats. He says the guidelines do not allow people to converge and eat in restaurants.

MBALE:RDC Vows To Arrest Journalists Who Misrepresent Facts On The Works Of The COVID-19 Taskforce.

By: Egonda Emmanuel Anelka Mbale Resident District Commissioner Suleiman Baraza Ogajo has threatened to arrest journalists who misrepresent facts regarding the work done by the District COVID-19 Task Force. Ogajo sounded the warning today while receiving more than seven tones of maize flour from Mbale District Woman Member of Parliament Connie Nakayenze Galiwango. Nakayenze also handed over sugar and salt. According to Ogajo, the Mbale District Task Force has done a commendable job and journalists must report the facts. Connie Nakayenze Galiwango the Mbale District Woman MP said that she has used the 20 million shillings given to every legislator to purchase food and other essential items. Nakayenze said she could not return the money yet several people in Mbale need food. Nakayenze also urged the District Task Forces countrywide not to politicize their work. She said that the country is battling the COVID-19 pandemic which is a matter of life and death and so politicking can wait.

Seven Laboratories Cleared To Start Testing For COVID-19 in Uganda

Until today, the country was only using the Entebbe based Uganda Virus Research Institute-UVRI to conduct COVID-19 tests. The new centres include Makerere University's department of microbiology and immunology, National Health Laboratory Services, the Infectious Disease Research Collaboration in Tororo district, the Uganda Virus Research Institute Plague Laboratory in Arua district, Gulu University, Rakai Health Sciences Laboratory and the Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital laboratory. According to the health ministry, the locations were chosen based on the dynamics of infection spread of the disease and the availability of testing reagents. Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng announced this during the third national COVID-19 briefing held today in Kampala.
